In October, the air is chillier, the sweaters are warmer, and the movies are spookier. What better way to celebrate the season than to watch nostalgic Halloween movies from your childhood?
To help you determine which classic film to start with (perhaps using our satellite TV package), the team at USDish compiled our 2023 report of the most searched spooky kids’ movies in each state. Is your state more into the classics like The Addams Family or Hocus Pocus, or more interested in recent remakes and sequels like Wednesday or Hocus Pocus 2?

Bonus Spooky Stats
- Despite coming out nearly 40 years ago, Ghostbusters tops our list as the most searched spooky children’s movie in 14 states.
- In our 2022 report, Scooby-Doo was searched in the most states, but this year it comes in second—it’s the most Googled film in 8 states.
- The Addams Family was the third most searched, claiming the favor of 7 states. This may have something to do with the extremely popular Wednesday TV series on Netflix.
- Halloweentown—which was filmed in St. Helen’s—still remains Oregon’s most searched kids Halloween movie. Who said state pride can’t be spooky?
- It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, a classic Halloween movie, claimed the top spot in 5 states this year.
- Shockingly, popular films like Coraline, Hocus Pocus (1993), Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Casper were only the most popular in one state each!
Methodology
To identify each state’s most searched kid’s spooky movie, we first started with a filtered list of spooky kids movies from Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. Then, we used SEMRush to find the movies that were ranked the highest in keyword searches. When we had our final list, we implemented GoogleTrends to find each state’s most-searched movie.
